The World Economic Forum just announced their appointees for the 2009 Young Global Leaders and we are incredibly excited that Priya has been selected. Other honorees this year include Mark Zuckerberg – founder and CEO of Facebook, Premal Shah – President of Kiva, Chris Martin from Coldplay and Sachin Tendulkar from the Indian cricket team. Good in a Nutshell Bracelet

Posted Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 by amelia

If you are looking for a new look this Spring then look no further– the Good in a Nutshell bracelet is my top choice for fresh spring style. Not only is this fair trade bracelet fashionable but it’s also eco-friendly!

The beads on this elastic bracelet are tagua nuts which can be found in the rainforests of Latin America. For villagers in small rainforest towns these sustainably harvested nuts are an important source of income. The villagers collect the nuts, turn them into beads by drilling a hole through the center and then dye them so that they are the beautiful colors you see in our bracelets.

Once the nuts have been dyed they are sold to our partners in Colombia, Salvarte. Salvarte then pays fair wages to the small artisan cooperative, Tierra Santa Café, to have the beads strung into the bracelets that you see here. good-in-a-nutshell

With the wages earned from making these bracelets the artisans of Tierra Santa Café are able to pursue a higher education to improve their lives and the future of their families.

Now that’s a look you can feel good about!

We are getting earrings!

No more trying to match your World of Good bracelet and necklace set with a random pair of earrings from your jewelry box. That’s right! Check out all of the beautiful necklace and bracelet sets + earrings in the fall catalog. I have worked at World of Good for a little over three years, and about once every six months, I politely ask the product sourcing team, “Can you explain to me why we don’t carry earrings?” Well, the day has finally arrived and I’m psyched. Too bad I will have to wait until fall to stock up on some of my favorite sets – can’t wait for the Faceted Bead Bauble Earrings to hit the shelves. Check them out under the global treasures jewelry line.

Sneak Peak at our 2008 Social Impact Report

Posted Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 by audrey

We are in the process of creating World of Good’s 2008 Social Impact Report. The report is a great way for us to reflect on the previous year and measure the impact we have made on our artisan partners. In addition to the impact we make through our purchases, we also support our communities by providing small grants to improve the health and education of the artisans and their families. You can check out previous social impact reports here.

This year, in partnership with World of Good: Development Organization (World of Good, Inc.’s independent, non-profit sister organization), we were able to provide four small grants to our artisan communities to improve the health and education of our partners.

In 2008, World of Good partnered with World of Good: Development Organization to sponsor a boarding home in the town of Huacar, so that each year six high-school age students from San Juan de Yanac can attend high school. The students live at the boarding house during the week and spend the weekend at home with their families.

At the beginning of the year, in partnership with Manos Amigas, we provided funding to support a boarding house in a rural community in Peru, so that local children could attend high school. In addition, working with the Development Wheel in Bangladesh, we helped construct a school that provides free education to 150 children of artisans who are unable to seek formal education. Keep checking in to read the full social impact report. It should be up on our website in about a month.

Since 2005 the Development Organization has provided 29 grants to our artisan partners. Every year, World of Good, Inc. has an annual fundraiser sale where half of all the proceeds are donated to the Development Organization to support the small grants program.

Consumers still buying green

Posted Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 by siddharth

In my last post I was hoping that this economic downturn (meltdown, recession, depression or nom du jour you prefer) does not proportionately affect socially responsible consumption. So I was happy to read the results of a survey by Green Seal that showed the majority of consumers are buying as many or more green products as before. It was also heartening to read that consumers are becoming more savvy about seeing through greenwashing.

Consumers Still Buying Green Through Economic Changes

Most consumers have not cut back their spending on green products, according to a new survey.

The 2009 National Green Buying survey by Green Seal and EnviroMedia Social Marketing found that half of consumers are buying just as many green products now as they did before the economic downturn began. An additional 19 percent are buying more products than before, and 14 percent are buying fewer green products.

When asked what the main factor is when making purchasing decisions, the amount of consumers that said a product’s reputation mattered most (21 percent) was followed closely by word of mouth (19 percent) and brand loyalty (15 percent).

Only 9 percent said that green advertising is the primary influence on their purchase choices.

The survey revealed a few other issues related to green advertising. About one in three of those surveyed said they do not know how to tell if the claims on a green product are true, with only one out of 10 consumers trusting product claims no matter what.

Some consumers are taking the initiative to ferret out the truth behind some advertisements, with 24 percent saying the read packaging to understand more about claims and 17 percent researching online or looking at studies.

Consumers were also asked which green actions they make, with the grand majority (87 percent) saying they recycle. Almost the same amount look for minimal packaging (60 percent) and buy green cleaning products (58 percent), and 31 percent buy green personal care products.

Conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, the telephone survey questioned 1,000 consumers. Details of the survey were announced at the Greenwashing Forum at the University of Oregon on Feb. 6.

Goodbye Elephant Pharmacy

Posted Friday, February 6th, 2009 by siddharth

This week, Elephant Pharmacy, a local chain and green business pioneer that was a neighbor and one of World of Good’s earliest customers went out of business. Unlike your average, sterile big-box pharmacy, Elephant Pharmacy had great service and was a shopping pleasure. Billed as the future Whole Foods of pharmacies and with it’s “the pharmacy that prescribes yoga” tagline, Elephant Pharmacy was a World of Good staff favorite.

These are difficult times for most companies and especially tough for the higher-end stores in each market (like Elephant) as consumers cut back on expenses everywhere. Given that consumption is falling (not necessarily a bad thing for the planet and everyone on it in the long term) my hope is that, now more than ever, people will want to maximize the positive impact of spending their limited dollars i.e. buying organic, local, fair trade. So while we will miss Elephant, I hope that as a whole companies that are green, socially responsible etc. are able to stand out and thrive despite the economic downturn.
